Maph Internships

Below are some brief descriptions of the internships offered through Maph for the Summer of 2015. But first, a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • You can apply for more than 1 internship, and in fact we encourage you to apply to multiple internships. The deadline is Monday, May 4th at 5:00 pm.
  • Interns will be expected to provide 300 hours, 30 hours/week over 10 weeks (there is some flexibility here, be sure to communicate with Maren and with your supervisor). All interns will receive a salary of $3300.
  • Matt and I can, and will, look at the application materials for internships. Kerri and GSA are also great resources to utilize.
  • All materials should be submitted to the Maph office, except for Make Magazine and Sputnik Press which go through GSA.

Adventure Stage Chicago

Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) is the professional theatre program of the Northwestern Settlement that creates and tells heroic stories about young people. ASC’s original productions contain themes and ideas developed with input from community members, thereby engaging and inspiring audiences to be the heroes of their own lives.

Browne & Miller Literary Associates

Browne & Miller Literary Associates is Chicago’s only full-service, independent literary agency.Browne & Miller currently represent authors writing in most genres of commercial adult fiction and non-fiction, as well as select young adult projects. As a hands-on, editorially-focused agency, they work closely with clients to develop manuscripts and proposals for submission and sale.

Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum cares for, showcases, and interprets millions of authentic pieces of Chicago and U.S. history. The Chicago History Museum intern is expected to provide research support for the development of future exhibition projects and the expansion of the museum’s online collection portal. Interns will work with collections and curatorial staff to conduct content and collections research for upcoming exhibitions and tours, and to create new expanded descriptions of existing collection items.

Chicago Humanities Festival

The Chicago Humanities Festival creates opportunities for people of all ages to support, enjoy and explore the humanities. The CHF is devoted to making the humanities a vital and vibrant ingredient of daily life. They believe that access to cultural, artistic and educational opportunities is a necessary element for a healthy and robust civic environment. The CHF intern will work with the programming team to develop public program and manage day-to-day logistics of the summer workshop series.

Illinois Humanities Council

The IHC engages citizens in all communities across Illinois in dynamic conversations on issues critical to our democracy. IHC lowers barriers to participation and offers access to programs, events and grants to all residents with programs that are free and open to the public. The intern will assist the Director of Programs, as well as other Illinois Humanities Council program and development staff, in the overall execution of the organization’s mission.

MAKE Literary Magazine

MAKE Literary Magazine publishes contemporary literary writing through its biannual print publication. Chock full of fiction, poetry, essays, art, and reviews MAKE is substantial in both feel and scope. MAKE expands on the Chicago tradition to entertain and to inform. A biannual publication, MAKE circulates 1,000 copies twice a year throughout the United States. The internship will include work for the website and social media, attendance and assistance with book fairs and literary events in Chicago, and the magazine’s 10th anniversary issue.

The Newberry Library

A world-renowned independent research library in Chicago, the Newberry acquires and preserves a broad array of special collections research materials relating to the civilizations of Europe and the Americas. This intern will participate in the preservation, arrangement, re-housing, and description of Modern Manuscript collections focusing on the cultural, social, political, and economic history of Chicago and the Midwest from settlement to the present day.

The Odyssey Project

A core program of the Illinois Humanities Council, The Odyssey Project provides college-level instruction in the humanities through seminars led by instructors at top-tier colleges and universities. The Odyssey Project offers free courses in philosophy, literature, art history, and U.S. history for men and women living below poverty level. You can talk to Hilary Strang for more information on The Odyssey Project, as she is one of those top-tier instructors!

Rafael Torch Memorial Service Fellowship

This service fellowship funds an otherwise unpaid position internship in any non-sectarian, non-profit social justice, community-building, or other service- or outreach-focused organization in Chicago during the summer after graduation. The fellowship is intended to promote connections between humanistic inquiry and service work outside the academy in the city of Chicago. Applicants must have identified and corresponded with the organization with which they wish to work before submitted their application materials.

Smart Museum of Art

This internship offers the opportunity to get broad arts communications experience by assisting the Smart Museum of Art’s external relations team with new and ongoing efforts. The internship will focus on preparations for the relaunch of the Museum’s website in the fall, assisting with planning, project management, and content creation. It will also offer opportunities to build and engage audiences through the Smart’s social media platforms.

Sputnik Press

Sputnik Press provide facilities and services available to artists who need a place to create or exhibit their original artwork, especially those who cannot otherwise obtain access to traditional printmaking facilities. Sputnik also provides education in printmaking practices though uniting professional artists with a diverse community of emerging artists, established artists, youth, and adults. At Spudnik Press, artists create and use printed materials to further culture and engage with their community. Through sharing materials, equipment, and studio space, artists are also sharing technical skills, practical knowledge, and creative processes.
